Chemically, Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) is a strong monoprotic acid — meaning each molecule releases only a single proton ($H^+$), but does so completely and irreversibly in water. The acid dissociation constant ($pKa$) of hydrochloric acid is -6.3, placing it among the strongest known acids (following superacids).

From an industrial perspective, hydrochloric acid is predominantly produced as a by-product of chlorination processes of organic compounds — notably in the production of Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM) for PVC and Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate (MDI) for polyurethane.
